Our History

In 1907, Morton Scott moved to Gatesville and purchased a furniture business that had operated in Gatesville since 1882. He opened the only mortuary in town inside that same building on the west side of the square in downtown Gatesville. The business occupied one building with the mortuary on the second floor. Soon the space became inadequate, so in 1942, Morton Scott purchased a property at 904 E. Leon Street and built the funeral home just a few blocks from the square.

After his son, Robert Scott, completed school he went into business with his father, and they changed the name to Morton Scott & Son. Morton retired in 1947 and turned the business over to his children, Robert and Lois Scott. Then in 1974, after Robert Scott died, the third generation began to manage the business under Bob Scott. He managed the business until 1978 and then pursued his law career. Bob Scott sold the funeral home to Gary Beasley and the furniture store to Clay McClellan, who still operates what is now Leaird’s Furniture & Appliance.
