Winnie Alexander

Winnie Alexander, born almost 94 years ago, passed away early Thursday, April 25, 2019.   Winnie was born and grew up in Texas in the midst of the Depression. She and her family worked to put out the weekly newspaper her father started. Often she and her family stayed up all night Thursday to set the type, run the press, fold, and deliver the newspaper, then she went to school on Friday.   Certainly because of this background, Winnie chose to seek and earn a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. While there, she met the love of her life, Carmon.   When they married, Winnie worked while Carmon finished his degree, living in a tiny garage apartment. Their lives together were blessed with opportunities to travel during their more than 70 years of married life. They got to visit multiple places in both hemispheres, including South America, Europe and Asia.   Winnie had several passions here at home to which she was dedicated. She was active politically, and spent 20+ years encouraging candidates and office-holders in central Texas. She was so proud when she was presented with awards recognizing her accomplishments. Among these was being declared an official “Yellow Rose of Texas”, and being given an official permit to “…ride a horse, goat or sheep on theCapitol Grounds of the State of Texas”.   When she joined the local Quilting Club, she had never quilted before. But once she started, she became very prolific, hand-stitching hundreds of projects. But it was the friendships that she made that she felt were the true fabric of the quilts.   Even these activities were not enough. She also felt called to start and chair the Flower Committee of her church, providing live floral arrangements every Sunday.   In addition to her husband Carmon, family who loved her include her four children: Jim, Carol, Dawn and Bruce. She had four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, as well as sponsored children worldwide. There are many others in her family and world of friends who will miss her.   A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, May 5th at 2pm at The Presbyterian Church of Gatesville, Texas, with light refreshments to follow.   In lieu of flowers, we would encourage donations to the Flower Fund of The Presbyterian Church, as Winnie always wanted to grace the sanctuary with the beauty of God’s creations.
