Wilford Lowery Wright, known to all as Larry, was born on February 18, 1946, in Levita, Texas. He was the middle child of three born to C.B. and Lena Dixon Wright. Larry had two sisters, Daune and Paula. While growing up in a loving home, he attended school in Gatesville. In 1966, Larry joined the Army Reserve and did his basic training in El Paso, Texas, then was stationed in Oklahoma. After doing carpenter work for several years, Larry went to work at Mates, and then in Range Control at Ft. Hood where he retired.
Larry loved racing cars in his younger years, earning the nickname, Racer Wright, because he could not be beat. Larry’s first love was for horses, starting at the young age of two, after his dad set him on the back of a horse. Always having a horse of his own, Larry was a true cowboy. When he was fifteen, he began riding and training racehorses. He was a jockey for several years, winning many races. Later, his love for Team Roping, won him many team roping events and rodeos. He loved roping, working in his saddle shop and rebuilding cars.
Larry married Paula Jones in October 1972. Together they raised three daughters, Angela, Amy, and April.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, C.B. and Lena Dixon Wright; sister, Paula Allen; and grandson, Joshua Reeder.
He is survived by his daughters, Angela McDonald and husband, James, Amy Reeder and husband, Brian, April Acosta and husband, Angel; longtime girlfriend, Sonja Tatro; twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren; sister, Daune Williams and husband, Earl; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many close friends.
A special thank you to Sara Tatro and to his team of caregivers at Amedisys Hospice, Whitney, Allen, and Alexis.
