Sylvan was born April 11, 1927 in Talladega County Alabama and passed away August 20, 2020 in Gatesville, Texas at the age of 93. A graveside service will be held Monday August 24, 2020 at 2 PM in West Lawn Cemetery in Henryetta, OK. A memorial service is planned in the future in Gatesville, TX. Sylvan grew up in Alabama before moving to Midland, TX in 1948. He worked at the Midland National Bank for nineteen years with the exception of serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1967, Sylvan and his family moved to Henryetta, OK to work for the American Exchange Bank. Sylvan retired from banking as bank president in 1987 and moved to Gatesville, TX. After 39 years of banking, Sylvan had 33 years of “retirement”. He spent 31 of those years in maintaining and improving their properties near Gatesville, being active in ranching and other activities, such as grafting pecan trees and other service related projects. When they became unable to care for the ranch, they moved and spent his last 2 years in town. Sylvan had a strong belief in God and Jesus. He was actively involved in churches of Christ, serving in leadership and teaching wherever the family was living. He was member of Gatesville Church of Christ. Sylvan is survived by his wife, Helen Mansell Horne; daughter, Kay Horne Bryant and husband Randy; son, Matt Horne; daughter, Jana Horne Neill; stepdaughter, Anita Mansell Price and husband Darrell; stepson, Steve Mansell and wife Kimberlie; and a multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sylvan was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Sadie Zeitz Horne; ten siblings; stepson, Dale Mansell and many friends.
