Sarath Buth

Sarath Buth, age 79 of Gatesville, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Scott’s Funeral Home.

Sarath was born November 10, 1946 in Krong Battambang, Cambodia. He grew up and attended school in Krong Battambang. As a young man, he survived Khmer Rouge concentration camp in Cambodia. At age 35, he was able to escape Cambodia and immigrate to the United States through sponsorship through Sony Mak and the church.

After spending a brief time in Florida, Sarath moved to Dallas, Texas, where he married Lay Sun. Together, they had two children, Monica and Timothy.

Sarath was a hardworking man who believed strongly in family and providing a better life for those he loved. In 1996, after years of hard work and saving, he purchased Arcadia Liquor Store in downtown Dallas. He built the business while instilling in his children the same strong family values he had learned during his childhood.

In 2004, Sarath and his family sold the liquor store and moved to Gatesville, where he purchased Shortstop Liquor in Fort Gates, also known as the “Yellow Beer Barn.” In 2009, he married Chanthy Sok, and they made their home together in Gatesville. Sarath sold the business in 2014 and retired, enjoying a peaceful life surrounded by his family.

In his retirement, Sarath enjoyed gardening, cooking, and working on DIY projects around his home.

Sarath was preceded in death by his parents; and his second oldest sister. He is survived by his wife, Chanthy Buth; the mother of his children, Lay Sun; daughter, Monica Buth; son, Timothy Buth; and his beloved family dog, Acie.
