Raymond Guy Floyd

Raymond Guy Floyd, age 90, beloved husband, cherished father, grandpa, and great-grandpa, and dear brother, passed from this life on Sunday, February 16, 2020 with his wife of almost 70 years and other loved ones at his side.

Raymond was born on July 21, 1929 to Howard Porter Floyd and Gladys Annie Ogle. He was the fourth of eight children and worked hard on the family farm while attending school in Jonesboro. He graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army for one year and in the U.S. Army Reserve for six years.

Around 1949, he worked in construction and was on the crew that built the Gatesville Elementary School. He did such a good job that he was asked to continue working with the crew in Chicago, but he did not want to leave Gatesville. He was always very proud to have had a part in building a school his five children would later attend.

On October 2, 1950, he married Mary Frances Glass. He said the first time he spotted Mary Frances across a gymnasium, he told the friend he was with “I’m going to marry her.” Raymond started working for Murry Blakley in 1952 at Blakley’s Floor Service and worked there for 17 years. In 1969, Blakley sold the business to Raymond. Raymond and Mary Frances operated Floyd’s Floor Service together for 26 years before retiring in 1995.

Baptized in 1960, and a longtime member of the Gatesville Church of Christ, Raymond will always be remembered for his strong work ethic, honesty, and sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, by his brothers H.P. Floyd, Jr., John Floyd, and Tom Floyd, and by his sister, Bernice Schoenewolf. Left behind to cherish memories are his wife; his five children: Brenda Hadeler and husband David, Debra Williams and husband David Putman, Nancy Frazee and husband Craig, Dr. James Floyd and wife Kelley, and Alisa Hudson and husband David. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Trevor Williams and wife Veronica, Blake Williams, Ryan Hadeler, Sean Hadeler, Kirsten Frazee Burkhalter and husband Casey, Robert Frazee, Mariel Frazee, Matthew Hudson, Katherine Hudson, Kade Floyd, and Erica Floyd; two great-grandchildren: Torin and Arwen Williams; his sister Pauline Young of Austin; his brother Joe Floyd and wife Carolyn of Gatesville; his brother Bill Floyd of Gatesville; and many nieces and nephews.

Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2020 at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Bruce Mercer officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Restland Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are David Hadeler, David Putman, Craig Frazee, David Hudson, Melinda Burke, Dale White, Charles Finley, Olga Suniga, and Anna Kuzenka.

His family would like to thank Melinda Burke and many others from the Gatesville Church of Christ, Kindred Hospice, Providence Hospice, Olga Suniga, and Anna Kuzenka for their help in caring for him in his final days. His children would like to thank their mother for her many years of caring for him at home.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Gatesville Church of Christ, 2417 East Main Street, Gatesville, Texas 76528.
