R. D. Nichols, age 85 of the Pancake community of Coryell County, passed away on Friday, June 25, 2021 in Gatesville.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2021 at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Matt Dossey officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Private family interment will follow services at Jonesboro Cemetery.
R. D. was born in the Whitehall community in Coryell County, on January 20, 1936 to the late J.W. (Tobe) and Callie Painter Nichols. He grew up in Coryell County and graduated from Turnersville High School in 1954. In 1955, he joined the U.S. Navy and served two years, until being honorably discharged. He married Myra Watson on November 22, 1958. After their marriage, they resided in Odessa and Gatesville, until 1971 when they moved to the Pancake community. He worked for the Texas Youth Commission and later T.D.C.J., retiring in 1991 with 30 years of service. He was a member of Jonesboro Baptist Church and Gatesville Masonic Lodge #197 A.F. & A.M.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wes Nichols and Jack Nichols.
R. D. is survived by his wife of 62 years, Myra Nichols; sons, Todd Nichols and wife, Donna, Andy Nichols; sister, Lettie Mae Robinette; sister-in-law, Doris Nichols; grandchildren, Erin DeVillier and husband, Adam, Mitch Nichols, Kristen McKinney and husband, Matt, Josh Chapman and wife, Alli, Jeremiah Chapman and wife, Ashley, and eleven great-grandchildren, Nehemiah, Callie, Layla, Charlie, Alex, Kaelyn, John, Ryann, Harper, Ashton and Elli and a nephew, Odis (Butch) Nichols.
In lieu of flowers, the family has designated memorials be made to the Jonesboro Cemetery Assn., 2415 CR 194, Jonesboro, TX 76538.
