Matt Ware, age 100 of Gatesville, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023.

Memorial services with military honors, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel.  Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Interment with his wife, Dean will be held privately at Restland Cemetery.

Matt was born on December 12, 1922, in Crosbyton, to the late Penn Ware and Buna Weaver Ware. In 1929, the family relocated to the Ater community of Coryell County, where Matt attended the one-room schoolhouse that he fondly referred to as "The University of Ater." It was during this time that Matt met the love of his life, Dean Carpenter.  After several years of courtship, Matt and Dean were married in 1945 and settled in Abilene and later in Odessa. Together, they raised two children, Jimmy and Dianne. In 1969, Matt and Dean moved to Hico, where they opened a flourishing florist and greenhouse business. Matt took care of the plants in the greenhouse and handled deliveries, while Dean worked on the beautiful floral arrangements.

Matt served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was awarded the Bronze Star for valor. Following his overseas deployment, Matt continued his Army service as guard at the German Prisoner of War Camp in Hearne. Matt had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel and was an avid fan of the National Finals Rodeo. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people, never meeting a stranger in his life. However, the passing of his beloved wife, Dean, earlier this year weighed heavily on his heart. He often spoke of waking up in the middle of the night, reaching over to reassure Dean, only to find himself alone.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 77 years, Dean; son, Jimmy Brooks Ware and wife, Linda; daughter, Bessie Dianne Martin and husband, Keith.

Matt is survived by his grandson, Austin Brooks Ware and wife, Morlley, of Kingwood; granddaughter, Hope Treacy McCracken and husband, Andrew, of Belton; as well as great-grandchildren, Matthew Ware, Madison Ware, and Kaitlyn McCracken.

Matt will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey. May he rest in eternal peace.
