Margie Louise Cummings passed away on August 24, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her family.
A service celebrating Margie’s life will be held at Gatesville Church of Christ on Thursday August 28, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Pearl Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Scott’s funeral home in Gatesville on Wednesday August 27, 2025 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
Margie was born June 5, 1940, at Hood Army Camp in the Elijah community to the late Arlie and Faye Gartman. In 1942, when Margie was just two years old, her family moved to the Pearl community following the displacement of the Elijah community. She was an only child until age six, when her twin sisters, Linda and Brenda, were born. She often joked that they “ruined her life,” but she loved them dearly. Her childhood in Pearl was full of cousins, country adventures, catching frogs, running through fields, and helping her dad plow with their draft horses, Pudding and Blue.
Margie attended school at Pearl until her sophomore year. A proud Pearl Dragon, she later transferred to Evant High School, where she truly shined. She was named Harvest Queen, Most Popular, FFA Sweetheart, and more—leaving her mark on the school and community.
She began dating Jim Cummings in the 8th grade, and in 1958, shortly after graduating high school, they married. The couple first lived in Bee House, then Turnersville, where they celebrated the births of daughters Darlene, Tammy, and Lesa. They later moved to Copperas Cove, while in Cove they welcomed their one and only son Jimmie. In 1967, they settled in the Unity Community near Rumley, where they built their life together and, in 1970, celebrated the birth of their youngest daughter, Mary Ann.
Margie loved raising her children and adored her 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was kind, giving, and a little bit fancy—she loved shopping trips, finding treasures at garage and estate sales, and a good deal at Tuesday Morning or Dillard’s. She was also a talented cook and baker, remembered for her wonderful dishes and desserts that became family favorites.
Margie dearly loved her yard. She filled it with florals and plants, often turning around if she spotted a good nursery and driving to other towns in search of something beautiful to bring home. In her later years, she and Mary Ann would drive slowly up and down the driveway, simply admiring the beauty of her yard together.
Holidays were among Margie’s greatest joys. Christmas was her favorite, and she shopped all year long to find thoughtful and personal gifts for every single family member. She delighted in hosting Easter gatherings and watching the egg hunts down the driveway—going so far as to visit banks in several counties to fill the eggs with $2 bills. Thanksgiving was another treasured family tradition where she served her best chocolate apples and Eves cheesecakes.
Her faith was central to her life. A devoted member of Pearl Church of Christ, Margie loved her church family and the Lord. She read the Bible cover to cover for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, gifting them with these cherished Bibles at Christmas. She also enjoyed helping with Vacation Bible School lunches and church auctions over the years.
Margie was the matriarch and the very epitome of her family. She held them together with love, faith, and strength, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished for generations.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arlie and Faye Gartman; her grandson, Randy Matthew Jones; her brother-in-law, Ronnie Hunt; many beloved cousins; and her aunts and uncles.
She is survived by daughters Darlene Barry, Tam Cummings, Lesa Shellenbarger and husband Jimmy, and Mary Ann Davison and husband Hote; son Jimmie Cummings and wife Kim; and sisters Linda Ray and husband Ronald, and Brenda Hunt.
Grandchildren include Chastity Jones, Arlie Jones, Ricky Turner, Candace Lusk and husband Brian, Dillon Dewald and wife Erin, Dixon Dewald, Dimmy Weeks, Dos Davison, Kyla Brown and husband Tanner, Kayli Brantley, Kelsi Cummings, and Kenli Cummings. Great-grandchildren include Denver and Davyn Conklin, Kenley Turner, Ryan Turner, Braidy, Julie, and Benjamin Lusk, Jackson, Hunter, Greer, Sloane, and Whitt Dewald, Justice, River, and Raylyn Dewald, Cooper Tidwell, Fynlee, Waden, Weston, and Konlee Brown, Burks Brantley, Hernan Eufracio. She also leaves behind nephews Clay, John, and Jared Hunt, and Christopher and Ryan Ray.
She dearly loved all who came to any family function or gathering. Two who held an especially close place in her heart were Bob Goulden and Danielle Welch. She was also blessed with the best neighbors anyone could have, Robert and Alicia Straley.
Pallbearers will be Bob Goulden, Robert Straley, Calvin Burks, Greg Clary, Rance Burks, John Herbst, and Dennis Herbst. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons.
Margie will be remembered for her laughter, her love of family, her beautiful yard, her holiday traditions and the faith she carried throughout her life.
