Lorene Muegge Jacobs

A mother’s greatest fear isn’t death. It’s the thought of leaving her children in a world where no one will love them quite like she does. She prays that her love wraps around them forever, guiding them, protecting them, and reminding them they were loved beyond measure.

Lorene Jacobs, age 91, passed away Tuesday, April 14th at the Meadows in Gatesville after a short illness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 18th at St. John Lutheran Church, 10801 FM 929, Gatesville, with Rev. Christopher Richmann, Ph.D. officiating. Interment at the church cemetery will follow. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, April 17th, at Scott’s Funeral Home.

Lorene was born at her parents’ home on the outskirts of McGregor, Texas, on August 12th, 1934, where her three older brothers began their life-long watch for their baby sister. Baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in McGregor, Lorene continued to be a faithful Lutheran her entire life. After her marriage she joined St. John Lutheran, and shared her talents in numerous capacities – as a Sunday School teacher, holding several offices for the Women of the Church, Church Council and Secretary of the Cemetery Association.

Lorene graduated from McGregor High School in 1952, where she played volleyball and was a majorette. On November 27, 1953, she married Melvin Jacobs at Zion Lutheran in McGregor. For 46 years, Melvin and Lorene remained truly devoted to each other as they raised their three daughters on the family farm in Coryell City. She was a true farmer’s wife, working on the farm alongside Jake (Melvin) as well as a mother who loved family and life in general. She never backed down from a challenge and conquered each task with gusto.

She had numerous interests and hobbies including but not limited to decorating, crafting, sports (especially football), sewing, crocheting, traveling, clogging, wine making, and playing games. She especially enjoyed playing 84 with friends and Mexican Train with her grandkids and great grandkids. Her outside Christmas decorations were her pride and joy as people driving by enjoyed as well. For several years she dressed as Santa for a Christmas Eve visit to neighbor kids. She was known by Pastor Van as the “little ole winemaker” as the country church ran out of communion wine one Sunday morning and her homemade wine came to the rescue. Her travels took her to Europe, England and many states including Alaska and Hawaii. She was joined on several trips by her daughters and “adopted” son Mark Yows.

After the girls were in school, she enjoyed helping arrange flowers at Graves Florist during busy times. After that she worked several years at the school cafeteria, and finally at TDC, retiring after 13 years, then she continued as a part-time substitute teacher for TDC. She was also election judge for several years at the Coryell City polling location. Lorene was also secretary for the Coryell City-Osage Volunteer Fire Department and the Prairie Chapel schoolhouse.

Daughters remember her words of wisdom “things have ways of working out” which they usually would! When shopping for “store bought” clothes for herself or her daughters she would always say “I can make it cheaper than that” and then she did!

Grandkids and great grandkids remember her in her kitchen where she not only gave cooking lessons (especially jelly making) she gave “perms,” did clothes fittings and played games. Also, riding and driving the golf cart, picking bodark apples to feed cows, and spending weeks during summer.

Neighbors remember her for her homemade treats such as banana bread, pies, and cookies she often shared. Also, for her yard with her many flowers and mowing daily which she finally gave up when she turned 90.

Lorene was preceded in death by her husband Melvin (Jake) in April 2000; parents Louis and Doris Muegge; three brothers Lonnie, Ervin, and Eldon; her middle daughter Melva, and her son-in-law Tommy Williamson.

She is survived by daughters Marla (Buck) Kelsey, Mona (Andy) Carter; grandchildren Eric Braziel, Jessica (Jeramie) Taylor, Kristen (Aaron) Kravitz, Chase Carter (Brittany) and Callie (Jeremy) Gordon; great grandchildren Stephen, Rhianna, Jacob, Madelyn, Jake, Matt, Jaxon, Maddox, Autumn, Charlotte, Jett, Carter; sister-in-law Betty Parr Muegge and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A huge thank you to the amazing staff of the Meadows and Bluebonnet Hospice for their love and care for Mom over the last 3 months and to Lynridge Assisted Living during 2025. Also appreciated were the many visits from friends and family, especially Virginia Cox and Laura Widner.

Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Cemetery Association, 10801 FM 929, Gatesville, Texas 76528.

We will all miss her at family and friend gatherings, sporting events, and in her special pew at church. Lorene is at peace. She has gone home to be with her husband and daughter.
