June Gummelt

June Gummelt, age 76 of Mound, passed away in Temple on the evening of April 2, 2020. A private family graveside service will be at Mound Cemetery with Bruce Cox officiating.

June was born on June 3, 1943 in Goldthwaite, TX to the late O.B. Gummelt and Retta Gay Medford Gummelt. He grew up in Goldthwaite, and then the family moved to Levelland and Midland. He grew up working with his father on the brick job and quit high school to join his father and older brothers being a brick mason. After the death of his father the brothers spent many years following construction jobs and worked in Midland, TX/ Hobbs, NM/ Atlanta, GA/ Jacksonville, FL/ Dallas, TX/ and Houston, TX before settling around Gatesville and working in and around the central Texas area. June enjoyed working hard, laying brick and had a true talent for the profession. He married Ellen Ann McFarlin on January 26, 1975, and they moved to Mound, TX. June had a passion for fishing and caught many big fish. He found his forever home living on the Leon River and fishing. He was a diehard Texas Longhorn fan and loved watching college football. Once June’s health started to fail, he spent most days reading newspapers, and would usually read three papers a day, front to back. He fought poor health for a number of years. He was opinionated and very outspoken. You never had to wonder what he was thinking because he was sure to let you know. June was a very loving father and provider for his family. He was a baptized Christian and was a member of White Mound Baptist Church.

June was preceded in death by his parents; step father, J.B. Thompson; brothers, Horace O’Dale Gummelt and Gary O’Dean “Bud” Gummelt; and sister, Gayla Yvonne Glosson Meissner.

June is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ellen Ann Gummelt; daughters, Jalean Sutton and husband, Shanon, and Glenda Chastain; sons, Justin Gummelt and Jackie Gummelt and wife, Shelly; grandson. Cooper Lee Sutton; granddaughters, Kelbi Badger, Karlee Chastain, and Maddi Gummelt; sister, Janice Melde and husband, Lloyd; brother, Sam Gummelt; brother-in-laws, Buck McFarlin and wife, Betty and Sam McFarlin; and friend, Teresa Talamantez.
