John Denny Morgan

John Morgan, age 68 of Gatesville, passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 16, 2025 at Scott’s Funeral Home, with Pastor Wray Nunn officiating. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

John Denny Morgan was born on December 10, 1956 to John Edwin Morgan and Reva Joyce Holt Morgan in Gatesville, Texas. He grew up and attended school in Gatesville, graduating from Gatesville High School, where he met the love of his life, Jeanetta Ray Gober. They were married on November 14, 1975 and went on to have four children. John worked for Morgan Construction until 1980 when he started his career with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Palestine, Texas. He retired after 33 years as “Captain Morgan” from the Alfred D. Hughes Unit in Gatesville. He spent countless days running lines, and watching his kids seine for crawfish on the Trinity River. Throughout his life, John had a lot of hobbies including hunting, fishing, and building things in his shop. He also enjoyed chasing around his grandchildren, and watching them dig postholes.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Reva Morgan; sister, Lyn Carter; granddaughter, Holli Morgan; and nephew, Jarret Carter.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanetta; children, Jeramy Morgan and wife Tina, Jenifer Morgan, Jason Morgan and wife Rachel, and Jodi Thompson and husband Rex; grandchildren, Ariel, Austin, Alex, Jonathan, Jacob, Joby, Raynie, Michael, Faith, and Chastity; and 23 great grandchildren.
