James Malcholm McHargue, 81, of Gatesville, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2026.
Malcholm was born on September 13, 1944, to Lonnie Edgar and Gladys Estelle (Marshall) McHargue. He grew up in Mound, Texas, and graduated from Gatesville High School in 1963.
Malcholm spent much of his time away from work coaching softball and baseball, faithfully watching and cheering teams on at every event. He had a special love for softball, track and field, horse racing, and especially the dance floor. Many nights he could be found around Central Texas scootin’ his boots, winning dance contests, and earning a reputation as one of the best around. More importantly, Malcholm deeply loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A momma’s boy at heart, he is now reunited with his beloved Mamaw.
Malcholm was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Gladys McHargue; his eldest brother, Wayne McHargue; his nephew, Jackie McHargue, and Jackie’s wife, Tammy; and his nephew, Bobby McHargue.
He is survived by his brother, Joe McHargue, and wife Edie, along with their children, Blu Hartley and Tauna Conk; his son, Christopher Oren McHargue, and grandson, Caden McHargue, of Gatesville; his daughter, Brandy Beckett, and grandson, Alec Wade, of Pilot Point, Texas; granddaughter Ashley Westbrook and husband Michael of Gatesville; granddaughter Brittney Beckett of Anna, Texas; and his nephew, Russell Wayne McHargue of Austin, Texas. His great-grandchildren include Ebyn Michael, Oliver Patrick, Lazarus Daniel, Antony James, and baby Christina.
It goes without saying that many others could be mentioned—whether once, twice, or three times removed, or even semi-adopted. Malcholm’s reach was far and wide, impacting many, especially on the ball fields of Gatesville. From his cowboy hat to his boots, Malcholm will be remembered for his calm demeanor and the friendly handshake he extended to everyone he met.
Celebration of Life services will be held at a later date.
