James Merle Gallaway

James Gallaway, age 82, of Gatesville, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

James Merle Gallaway was born on September 21, 1943, in Coryell City, Texas, to the late Rupert Paul Gallaway and Lottie Beatrice Scott Gallaway. He attended school in Gatesville and graduated from Gatesville High School in 1961. Following graduation, he began his career working for Coca-Cola and Meeks Meat Market.

In 1964, James moved to Houston to work for Brown & Root. That same year, on May 22, he married the love of his life, Carolyn Sue Gallaway. In 1966, he was drafted into the United States Army and served for two years, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. After completing his service, James returned to Houston in 1968 and resumed his work with Brown & Root. In 1986, he and his family returned to Gatesville, where he continued working in the construction industry until his retirement.

James will be remembered as a kind and selfless man who was always willing to help others, never seeking recognition or thanks in return.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn; his two sons, Bryan and Charles; his sisters, Inez McKenzie, Dixie Satcher (Ted), and Pamela Bohne; his brother, Wilbur Gallaway (Kay); his sister-in-law, Sheila Blackman; his brother-in-law, Butch Snyder; and many nieces and nephews.
