James David (J.D.) Russell

James David Russell, age 89 of Waco, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2025 at Scott’s Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Williams officiating. Burial will follow at King Cemetery. The family will welcome visitors one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

J. D. Russell was born on August 20, 1935 in Pearl, Texas to the late David and Lola Reaves Russell. He grew up and attended school in Gatesville, graduating from Gatesville High School in 1953. He then attended Tarleton State University. After college, he enlisted in the United States Army. He met his future bride, Wanda Faubion, at the old Regal Theatre in Gatesville and it was love at first sight. They were married at St. John Lutheran Church in Coryell City on August 7, 1956. They shared 60 wonderful years together. J.D. served as a Coryell County Deputy Sheriff under Winfred (Windy) Cummings and later went to work for the Texas Department of Transportation, working in both Gatesville and Waco and retiring after 44 years. He enjoyed playing golf, watching football, and spending time with his family. He was the definition of a great father and was a good friend to all who knew him. He also attended and served as a Deacon for Trinity Lutheran Church in Waco.

J.D. was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wanda; and sister, Betty Jean Lee.

He is survived by his sons, David Russell and wife, Sharon of Dripping Springs, James (Jim) Russell of Waco, and Joey Russell of Waco; granddaughter, Taralah Hennington and husband, Eric of Dallas; and three great grandsons.
