James Cravens, age 80 of Gatesville, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 3, 2025, at Flint Creek Cemetery.
James Bedford Cravens was born July 29, 1944 to the late James Bert and Evelyn Lashley Cravens in Denison, Texas. He grew up and attended school in Denison. James enlisted into the United States Army at the age of 15 and proudly served his Country for the next 21 years until his retirement in 1980. During the Vietnam War, he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service. He was also awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, as well as other decorations, badges, and awards. While in Germany, James met the love of his life, Erna Bittman. They were united in marriage on March 25, 1966, and together they shared a profound bond that lasted for an incredible 59 years. In addition to his military accomplishments, James enjoyed working in the yard with Erna, collecting coins, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Sheila Cravens, Judy Cravens, and Joyce Nicholas; and son in law, Jerry Chartier.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Erna Cravens; daughter, Sandra Chartier; son, Bradford Cravens; sister, Peggy Staggs; grandchildren, Matthew Chartier, Megan Chartier, and Mitchell Chartier; great grandchildren, Mayson, Ellie, and Dakota; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
