Hershal Wayne Mooney passed away on October 3, 2026. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 8 at Scott's Funeral Home with Pastor Matt Dossey officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service.
Hershal Wayne Mooney was born on October 15, 1959, in Olney, Texas, and spent his life becoming the kind of man people did not easily forget.
Hershal was hardworking, outspoken, fiercely loyal, and deeply proud of the life he built. Those who knew Hershal rarely had to wonder where they stood with him.
Much of Gatesville knew Hershal through Mooney Plumbing, the business he owned and operated beginning in 1990. Plumbing was more than a career for Hershal; it was a trade he took tremendous pride in and a reputation he spent decades earning. Over the years, countless homes, businesses, families, and fellow tradesmen were impacted by the work that carried the Mooney name.
As proud as Hershal was of his business, nothing carried more weight with him than his family.
He shared his life with his wife, Renee Mooney. Together, they built a family that became the center of Hershal's world.
He was the proud father of Terry Mooney and his wife, Lauren, and Jenna Herbelin and her husband, Eric. He was “Pop” to three grandsons: Hayden, Lawson, and Kason. Being their grandfather was a role Hershal embraced wholeheartedly.
Hershal is also survived by his brother David Mooney and wife Denise; brother Audie Mooney and wife Debbie; and sister Opal Smith and husband Roger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Duane and Margie Mooney.
There are people who move through life quietly, leaving behind dates, names, and milestones that fit neatly into a few paragraphs. Hershal was never going to be one of those people. He left behind opinions, stories, lessons, expectations, laughter, friendships, a business bearing his name, and a family who knew exactly how deeply he loved them.
Hershal did not believe much in doing things halfway. He worked hard, expected a lot, loved his family fiercely, and made his presence known wherever he went.
And for everyone who knew and loved Hershal Wayne Mooney, life will be noticeably quieter without him in it.
