George Winfred Tatum

George Tatum, age 75 of Gatesville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, September 7, 2026.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 18, 2026 at Coryell Community Church. The family will receive visitors Thursday evening, September 17, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Scott’s Funeral Home.

George Winfred “Booger” Tatum was born April 13, 1951, in Gatesville, Texas to the late Edd and Frances Marshall Tatum. When just a young kid, he was affectionately given the nickname “Booger” by Sterling Barnard, and I guess you could say it stuck. He grew up and attended school in Gatesville and was the first in his family to graduate from Gatesville High School in 1969. (which was a fact that he was very proud of) After graduation, George began working on Sterling Barnard’s ranch, and then started in the construction field, framing houses and doing carpentry work. In 1980, he travelled to Wyoming with his sister’s family and spent time working for Fluor Daniels building a Chevron Gas plant. George often talked to his boys about his time in Wyoming and especially about the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson Hole. Years later, Scott had the opportunity to visit that very place with his dad, and it is one of his most treasured moments with his father. After returning from Wyoming, George started back to work framing and then transitioned to HVAC installation and electrical work, working for Circle R Heating and Air and becoming a Journeyman Electrician. In 2009, he began working for Coryell County Maintenance Department, where he eventually became the Maintenance Supervisor before retiring in December of 2020.

On Sept 23, 1977, George married Cherie Harris inside the Coryell County Courthouse. Together, they made their home in Gatesville and later in the Hay Valley Community, celebrating 48 wonderful years of marriage.

George loved spending time along the banks of the Leon River and taking a good road trip. He loved camping, playing cards and dominoes, but most of all, he cherished spending time with his family and friends. He never met a stranger and never forgot a face. He had a true servant’s heart and believed in taking care of others.

Above all, George was a wonderful husband and the best dad his boys could have ever asked for. His boys were everything to him. When they were young, he would take them along to his jobs, making sure they were by his side whenever he could. He never missed their games and was always cheering them on. George didn’t just tell his boys how to be good men, he showed them. Through the way he lived his life, loved his family, served others and kept his word, he taught his sons what it meant to be a good man and more importantly, what it truly meant to be a good daddy. His greatest legacy will live on in the men his boys have become and in the way they love and lead their own families.

George was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; brothers, Tommy and Joe Edd Tatum and his faithful dog, Speck.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cherie Tatum; sons, Scott Tatum and wife Nikole, and Logan Tatum and wife Carly; brothers, Ted Tatum and wife Louann, and Billy Tatum and wife Patti; sister, Susie Davidson and husband Jimmy; sister-in-law Cynthia Tatum; grandchildren, Chelsea Tatum, Scout Key, Gracie Key, Jett Wright, Kaitlin Tatum, Zakery Tatum, Brayden Tatum and Jeremiah Tatum; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
