George Vance Oney, age 95 from Pearl, Texas, passed away on February 13, 2026, from heart complications. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20 at Scott’s Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Pearl Cemetery. The family will receive visitors one hour before the service at the funeral home.
Vance, as he was always known, was born on March 26, 1930, in Pearl to the late Omie and Lottie Walker Oney. Vance grew up in Pearl and Lometa and graduated from Pearl High School. He obtained an associates degree from Tarleton State University before being drafted into the United States Army.
Vance married Margerie Nell Thompson on August 12, 1955, in Coleman, Texas. They spent years in Coleman, Tyler and San Angelo before raising their family in Monahans. Vance and Margerie retired to Llano and eventually moved to Gatesville in 2006.
Vance worked for Schlumberger Oilfield Services from 1956 until retirement in 1991. He enjoyed the challenging work and was very well respected by his coworkers.
After retirement, Marge and Vance moved to Llano where they became very active volunteers with the TEXAS BAPTIST MEN BUILDERS, where they served the Lord regularly participating in the construction of over 150 churches over a 20 plus year period throughout Texas and other states. Vance and Marge were active in Baptist churches where they lived and Vance served as an ordained deacon in several churches.
They loved to travel, particularly in the mountains of Colorado with frequent summer vacations with the family. He espoused the philosophy of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, but was ultimately known as someone who could fix almost anything and was always willing to help anyone who needed a hand.
He deeply loved and was very supportive of his children, grandchildren all the way to great great grandchildren. Always slow to anger and fast to forgive. He was loved by many dogs.
Vance is preceded in death by his wife, Margerie; and brother, Henry Oney.
He is survived by his sister, Sue Wilhite; sons, Stephen and Bruce Oney and wife, Ling; grandchildren, Jeromie Oney, Kimberly Bates and husband, Mike, Melissa Giacona and husband, Pete, Brian Vance Oney, and Preston George Oney; Caylee Hedges and husband, Ryan, Daylin Sanchez, Alana Sanchez, Mila Giacona, Pete Giacona, and Hazel Giacona; and great grandchild, Kamryn Hedges.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation to Texans on Mission (5351 Catron Dr. Dallas, TX 75227).
