Darlene Delano

Darlene Delano, age 89 of Gatesville, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2020.

Darlene Delano was born to Andrew and Elizabeth Smith on July 5, 1930 in Brownfield, Texas. She was the third oldest of six children. A piece of her heart always remained in high plains of west Texas where she grew up working hard picking cotton, driving tractors, and joking around with her siblings during the Great Depression era.

She married David Crockett Delano on February 11, 1948 and moved to Gatesville, Texas. They were blessed with three wonderful children that she loved fiercely and equally. Darlene never said a vicious word to her children, but provided very strong guidance throughout their lives. She knew her family and extended families' birthdays by heart and always cooked up a wonderful meal from her garden during their visits.

Darlene diligently took care of her husband that was blind from his service in World War II. She was a meticulous housekeeper. Many people would comment that her house looked as good as the day it was built. She conveyed this strong work ethic to her children and was very proud of their accomplishments.

She never did anything half way, and pity the shyster that thought he was going to get over on her. Darlene was very competitive and her family really enjoyed the rare occasion that they won a domino game often saving the scorecard. Her whole life was dedicated to her family, and we were all truly blessed to have her in our lives.

Darlene Delano was preceded in death by her father and mother, Andrew and Elizabeth Smith; husband, Crockett Delano; sisters, Betty Drew Massengale, Wanda Brandon, and Mary Ann Friemel.

She is survived by her three children, Mike Delano and wife, Lynda, Carolyn Gould and husband, Matt, Glen Delano and wife, Joann; sister, Mae Dean Richardson; brother, Clinton Smith and wife, Judy; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
