Charles C. Bruton

Charles Bruton, age 90, of Gatesville passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2026 surrounded by his loved ones.

Memorial services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Live Oak Baptist Church, with Pastor Matthew Hamilton officiating.

Charles C. Bruton was born on August 28, 1935 to Carmen White and Charlie Bruton. He attended school in Flat, Texas. While at Flat, he met the love of his life, Roberta Fisher. They married on June 24, 1955 in Flat. They happily and proudly lived their entire lives in Coryell County, most of which was spent together. Charles C. and Roberta were long time members of Live Oak Baptist Church in Gatesville. He served in the National Guard and spent a lot of that time keeping his fellow Guardsmen, who affectionately named him Happy Bruton, on their toes. He started building houses at age 12, with his dad and continued building with his son, Randy until 2021. This was a trade he taught and passed on to his son-in-law, grandsons and grandsons-in-law.

Charles C. traveled far and wide building churches, to include his own home church, Live Oak Baptist Church. He was well known for the many positions that he held at Live Oak. He served as a Deacon, while also being the Music Director, Sunday school teacher and working the Sunday school office with his sweetheart. In his 70+ years that he served the Live Oak family, there is no way of counting all the lives he helped bring to Christ.

His family cherished the last true cowboy that he was, even noting that he was born in the wrong century. Charles C. loved horses, Native American Culture, the mountains, the Wild West and his white t-shirt and cowboy hat. He wore many “hats,” but the cowboy hat was his family’s most favorite. They also loved to hear him sing, whistle and hum, as did so many around him. He was always so happy, as noted above by his nickname in the Guard. It was said by his daughter that she doesn’t have a single bad memory of her Daddy. He was an amazing father to his children, Randy and Terri. Known as Poppi to his grandchildren, he attended as many of their events as possible and often traveled to spend time with those that lived away. Charles C. was most proud of his family and his relationship with our Lord. As a true disciple of Christ, he shared the Lord with all of those he met.

While his family was so precious to him, he looked forward to the day he would be reunited with the love of his life and sit at the side of our Lord and Savior, in a new, healed body, reunited with all of those he loved and lost during his life. His family would have loved to have kept him here with them, but knew his place was in Heaven and on a gloomy February afternoon, the Lord called him home.

Charles C. was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Bruton (2021). He is survived by his son, Randy Bruton (Mary) and his daughter, Terri Baize (Danny); his grandchildren, Joi Wedding (Alan), Star Hamilton (Steven), Chelsi Hall (Sam), Jerilynn Schmidt (Ron), Shelby Fulton (Alex), and Tanner Bruton; his great grandchildren Tyler Wedding (Halle), Jalyn Wedding, James Hamilton (Shaylie), Harlie Wedding (Gage), Nathan Hall, Tahra Fulton, Mason Hall, Bae Fulton, Norah Fulton, Ryder Schmidt and Charlee Schmidt; great-great grandchildren Emery Hamilton and Hagan Wedding; his sister Elaine Barnett; his sisters-in-law, Frances Cuevas and Martha Fisher; and his loving nieces, nephews and their families.

“His Lord said to him ‘Well done, good and faithful servant” Matthew 25:21. ~He was the best there ever was.  The Lord broke the mold when He made Charles C. Bruton.
