Bernice Duggan, age 92 of Gatesville, passed away on Monday, October 19, 2026.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 9, 2026, at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
Bernice was born on June 7, 1934, in Highland Home, Alabama to the late Thomas H. and Patsy McKinzie Shreves. On March 8, 1952, she married Joseph H. Duggan and became his devoted supporter throughout his Army career, following him wherever his service took them. Together, they raised seven children, welcoming two daughters who were born in Delaware, one daughter who was born in New York, one son who was born in Texas, and three sons who were born in Alabama. Joseph’s military career also took the family to Kansas, Oklahoma, and Hawaii.
Bernice was an avid reader and could almost always be found with a book in her hands. Her love of reading inspired her to tell stories of her own, much to the delight of those around her. She also enjoyed crocheting and lovingly made numerous blankets, tablecloths and doilies to pass down to her children and grandchildren.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph Duggan; son, Ronald Duggan; grandsons, Timothy Duggan and Mack Fortune; and brother, Griffin Shreves.
Survivors include six children, Doreen Anderson, Linda Van Lengen, Thomas Duggan (Rak), Patricia Planas (Patrick), David Duggan (Shirley) and Joe Duggan (Denise); 9 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and many great-great grandchildren.
