Alton Spencer, age 96 of Gatesville, passed away on Monday, Dec. 9, 2019.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2019 at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Ken Laney officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.  Interment with Masonic Rites will follow at Smith Cemetery in Purmela.

Alton was born on Nov. 15, 1923 in Purmela, to the late Tom and Bertha Smith Spencer.  He went to school in Purmela.  He served in the Air Force during WWII.  He was a civil service employee for many years until his retirement when he then became a rural mail carrier.  He was a member of Live Oak Baptist Church and 50 year member of Gatesville Masonic Lodge #197 A.F. & A.M.  He enjoyed going to the Gatesville Senior Center, goat and sheep ranching and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannie Spencer; daughter, Fadene Spencer Shirley; son-in-law, Billy Don Shirley; brothers, Kidd Spencer and Lynn Spencer.

Survivors include his daughter, Kathy Bigham and husband, Robert; five grandchildren, Karen Rapp and husband, Brian, Annette Shirley, Matt Bigham and wife, Treva, Marsha Murphy and husband, Johnny, Carol Thorman; and ten great-grandchildren.
